The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, is well located, on the waterfront along the boardwalk. Which makes it very accessible. I went for a visit, only because I read that they have lots of artifacts from the Titanic. I was not deceived, they do have many items (letters, pieces of the boat, luggage’s, etc.) . Even if it’s an event that happened in 1912 and that no member of my family were involved (dead, missing or survivors). You can’t help it, that visit is emotional. Just by looking at the artifacts, it’s like you were part of the action . Because of the movie, perhaps, but still, you can’t remain insensitive to the atmosphere of the room. Everyone is silent, and it’s no a joyous mood, it’s almost sad.

Yes, I would recommend a visit, but it’s more like a tribute  to the brave passengers that died or survived, that tragedy!  From my point of view, I don’t think that Kids (youngers) would understand and appreciate that historic tour. But, if someone’s watched the movie before the visit, that is a tour that you might enjoy, because it all becomes real!

For the Historic aspect

The Old Burying Ground,

Barrington St, Halifax, NS B3J 3K4

I visited the Old Burying Ground in July 2014 , it was a very hot summer day, so I visited by accident . I was looking for a shaded site to sit . They have some large older trees. So while I was entering the site. I just decided to visit.

Like the name says it’s an old burying ground , if you prefer …it’s a cemetery. Don’t expect to see splendors or luxuriant flowers. But still, they have some benches if you need to rest or just want to meditate . They also have some monuments, that might be of some interest if you like to read (culture and heritage of Holigonians) .

Be careful when you walk and what you touch ,  It’s very old, some tombstones are already broken , some names have erased in time , we need to protect and respect this historical site.   Some of these old tombstones belongs to notables , a few militaries and regular  civilians , many of those died of the typhoid fever epidemic . From an historic point of view , It’s probably the oldest cemetery in Halifax. It was created in 1749, it’s now more then 2 acres of ground. Lots of ground to cover ( wear flat shoes).

Tips:best time to visit  is in a very hot summer day, since you’ll have lots of shaded area to protect you from the sun.

It’s free , easy to access, I would recommend to anyone who is eager to learn more about the culture of Halifax and their heritage (historic site).
